The series of One Step Back – Osman Hamdi consists of two paintings; Turtle Trainer and Man Reading Kuran in Green Mosque. These painting are reordered versions by abolishing perspective in original ones. Ottoman Hamdi stays in a critical point in late Ottoman Art. Before his period Ottoman’s left miniatures, started to make paintings on walls while trying to use perspective than canvas painting entered the Ottoman Art world. Ottoman Hamdi made his paintings on canvases with oriental themes by using photos taken by him. I assume that by reordering his two painting without perspective, progress! was taken one step back.
